From a teacher's perspective, the fact that he created something original and fantastic from minimal resources--cardboard boxes, string, and paper for the most part--was truly amazing. Caine was meticulous and put a lot of effort into his creation. As a result, he was very proud of his work. He made the arcade for himself; even though he wanted others to enjoy it, he loved learning about how everything was put together and how it worked. I hope that, as a teacher, I will encourage this same creativity and imagination.
I know that currently my class is involved in a unit on diseases and are creating their own research project from it. Some of the options for it include creating a Facebook page for their disease, a twitter, an emoji story, a newspaper, etc. or they can create their own project. I believe that students perform better when making a product they are invested in and proud of, which is why I am so excited my students have the opportunity to add a bit of their own creativity into their work. Additionally, using creativity and critical thinking is extremely important to becoming a well-rounded, life-long learner; these are skills I want my students to develop.
Something that is important to note about Caine’s project was that, even though Caine did not necessarily use technology himself, it was used to broadcast his creation to the world and made his arcade a functional reality. Thus, I believe that allowing for a wider audience to view one’s work, and technology can make that possible, can not only make students feel proud of their work but also encourage students to pursue a higher quality of work because they know someone else other than their teacher will be seeing it. This is something that I would like to have my students do at one point--broadcast their work to the world and see the effect they can have.
